I REMEMBER BEING A 15-YEAR-OLD AND GOING TO MY FIRST EVER SHOW
I work in a very independent sector and I don’t necessarily mean just music – although I promote throughout the whole of the UK, the majority of our shows are in Brighton and there’s no Academy or Barfly or giant venue there. Every single venue is either owned by the council or owned by individuals and I think as a consequence we live in a microclimate where independent music is really respected.
There’s a venue in Brighton called The Haunt, which is about 350-capacity and I’m more proud of us selling that out with Future Islands than anything that came after. After that was post their appearance on Letterman. Those 350 people had found, just through word of mouth, that Future Islands were a great band. They are an amazing band.
There’s eight of us in our team so I’m not going to love everything that we do. We did a show a little while ago with Peace who I’ve never been a huge fan of, but what I loved about that was, because their fan base is quite young, there were loads of kids at their first live gig. I remember being a 15-year-old and going to my first one, so it was really nice to be able to give those kids their first show.
