Camille Rearden – Independent Promoter, Bristol

I really like taking the power back. A lot of the promoters are men and it can be shit when you’re in a female band, trying to negotiate with them because there’s obviously rampant misogyny within the music world. It’s really nice to be able to be self- sufficient and not have to rely on other people – specifically men! I put on shows so people I don’t like don’t get to put on bands that I like or to help out my mates if they’re on tour so they’ll also put my bands on when I’m on tour.

DIY is a counter culture and it means different things to different people. To me it means gaining skills for yourself and then using those skills to lift up people who might not have the opportunities, and not having to rely on record label people and big boy promoters. You have complete control over everything that you want to do.
