I WAS THE ONE WHO COULD ADD UP AND DO THE TILL AT 4AM
My friend Reuben was in a band called Ladytron, who I’d DJ with and we went off on a world tour. When we came back we were all at a loose end so decided to start a night. Reuben, another mate Danny and I started our night called Evol. I’d DJ at the start and the end of the night and I was the only one who could add up and do the till at 4am – that’s pretty much how I started promoting.
We had a show with The xx and there were 16 people, Wild Beasts had even less. Klaxons was 40 people on their first show. Even bands like Brian Jonestown Massacre weren’t huge when we started working with them. The last time they played I had to get them sushi. Which is hard in Liverpool. The first place I tried said they’d just had a fire and had to close. I knew it was going to be one of those nights.
I find it hard to promote bands that I don’t like. You have to believe in what you book. I could do two shows a night for the rest of the year but I wouldn’t enjoy it. I’m trying to work on a less is more thing. Do what you think is right – in my experience, people who do that are the people that I’m still talking to 15 years down the line.
